How IP67 & IP68 Breathable Vents Protect Electronics in Sealed Enclosures

An electronics enclosure rated IP67 or IP68 provides excellent protection against dust and water ingress — at the moment of testing. But in real-world outdoor deployment, a common failure mode causes progressive IP degradation over months and years: thermal pressure cycling. An IP67 or IP68 rated breathable vent is the engineering solution that maintains enclosure protection across its full service life.

The IP Rating System — What IP67 and IP68 Mean

IP67
Complete dust protection (6) + protection against temporary immersion in water at 1 metre depth for up to 30 minutes (7). Standard for most outdoor electronics enclosures.
IP68
Complete dust protection (6) + protection against continuous submersion in water beyond 1 metre depth (8), with depth and duration defined by manufacturer. Highest standard for water protection.

Note: IP ratings are tested at the time of manufacture. They do not guarantee that the enclosure will maintain this rating throughout its service life under repeated thermal cycling, vibration, UV exposure, and seal ageing.

Why Outdoor Electronics Lose Their IP Rating Over Time

Consider an outdoor LED streetlight luminaire sealed to IP66. At midnight in winter, the luminaire is at 5°C. At midday in summer, the luminaire surface reaches 65°C. This 60°C temperature swing causes the sealed air inside to change volume significantly — Charles's Law: a 60°C rise from 20°C increases air volume by approximately 20%.

In a sealed enclosure with no vent, this creates a pressure differential of 100–200 mbar. The air has nowhere to go — so it pushes against seals. As the enclosure cools, the contracting air creates negative pressure, actively drawing outside air past any microscopic seal imperfection. Over hundreds or thousands of cycles:

  • Door gaskets develop micro-tears from repeated compression and release
  • Cable gland seals loosen as vibration and thermal expansion work them loose
  • Humid air is drawn in during each cooling phase
  • Condensation forms on PCBs, optical elements, connectors, and heat sinks
  • Corrosion, tracking, and optical fogging follow

How an IP67/IP68 Breathable Vent Prevents This

A breathable vent with ePTFE membrane provides a controlled air pathway through the enclosure wall. As the enclosure heats and internal pressure rises, air escapes through the membrane. As it cools, air re-enters. The pressure is continuously equalized — meaning no net stress on seals, no forced air movement past gaskets, and no moisture ingress.

The ePTFE membrane itself maintains IP68 waterproofing. Its microporous structure — pores approximately 0.2 microns in diameter — blocks liquid water droplets (100+ microns) and dust particles (1+ microns) while allowing air molecules (0.0003 microns) to pass freely. The enclosure breathes, but stays waterproof.

Which Electronics Enclosures Benefit Most From Breathable Vents?

LED Street Lights & Outdoor Luminaires

Outdoor LED luminaires experience large temperature swings from both ambient conditions and internal LED heat. Condensation on optical components causes lumen depreciation and white misting of covers. A breathable vent on the luminaire body prevents condensation while maintaining IP66 or IP67 ratings. M12×1.5 screw-in vents are standard for luminaire housings.

CCTV Camera Housings & IP Camera Enclosures

Camera housings in outdoor surveillance applications are particularly sensitive to moisture — condensation on the lens causes image blurring that can't be corrected without disassembly. Compact M6×0.75 breathable vents or adhesive ePTFE membrane patches provide pressure equalization without compromising the housing's IP66/IP67 rating.

IoT Sensors & Smart Meter Enclosures

IoT devices deployed outdoors — environmental sensors, LoRa gateways, NB-IoT nodes, smart meters — use compact sealed housings that are often not maintained for years. A breathable vent ensures these devices maintain their IP rating across the full deployment lifetime without condensation failure. Adhesive ePTFE membrane patches and M6 micro-vents are both used in IoT housing designs.

Traffic Controllers & Outdoor Display Enclosures

Traffic signal controllers, variable message signs, and outdoor digital displays use larger enclosures with significant internal electronics heat generation. Multiple M12 breathable vents are often installed to provide adequate air exchange for large enclosure volumes.

PCB Enclosures & Electronics Housings

General-purpose PCB enclosures used outdoors benefit from breathable vents regardless of the specific electronics inside. Any enclosure that is sealed to IP54 or above and exposed to temperature variation in outdoor or semi-outdoor environments should include a breathable vent as standard design practice.

Does a Breathable Vent Reduce the IP Rating of an Enclosure?

No — provided the vent itself carries the required IP rating. A Precigenix IP68 breathable vent installed correctly in an IP68 enclosure maintains the enclosure's IP68 rating. The ePTFE membrane is tested to IP68 independently, and the brass body is precision threaded and sealed to the enclosure wall with no water ingress path.

The common misconception is that "adding a hole reduces the IP rating." This is only true if the vent is not IP rated. A correctly specified and installed IP67/IP68 breathable vent maintains — and in field practice, actively improves — the long-term IP protection of the enclosure by eliminating the seal fatigue that causes gradual IP degradation.
